For every player on the field in the Village League, there are a dozen people you never see on the scoreboard who made the day possible. The Auckland Samoa Rugby Football Union runs on them: the volunteers and the aiga who give their time, week after week, asking for nothing in return.
Think about everything that has to happen for one Saturday of village rugby. Fields and gear sorted. Teams organised and fed. Sidelines set up. Young players minded. The draw run, the results recorded, the whole thing held together by people doing it for love of their village.
Most of that work is invisible by design. It is done early, done quietly, and done by parents, elders and former players who simply want the game to go on for the next generation.
This is tautua, service, the value at the very centre of fa'a Samoa and of this union. O le ala i le pule o le tautua: the path to leadership is through service. The people who run the eski, line the field and chase the paperwork are not in the background of the Village League. They are its foundation.
It is the same spirit that built this competition close to 30 years ago and the same spirit that will carry it forward.
So this is for them. To the volunteers, the team managers, the cooks, the drivers, the elders and the families who show up rain or shine: the union and every village says fa'afetai tele lava. You may not be on the team sheet, but make no mistake, the league does not happen without you.
