The whistle has blown on another Village League season, and with it close to three decades of Samoan village rugby in Auckland roll on. From its base in Otara, South Auckland, the Auckland Samoa Rugby Football Union brings 14 village teams together again this year, mana first, on and off the field.
This is more than a competition. Every fixture is a gathering of aiga and community. Families travel to back their village, elders pass the game on to the next generation, and young players learn what it means to wear the village jersey: a responsibility to the people standing behind them.
The 2025 league runs as a single division of 14 villages. Marist Old Boys, B/Y Vaiala, Vaimoso, Nations, Siumu, Sale'imoa, United Brothers, Nofoali'i, Pineula Salani, Apia Maroons, Magiagi, Leulumoega Tuai, Sataoa and Iva each play six round-robin games, before the ladder seeds the Cup, Plate and Bowl finals.
Each club carries the name, the colours and the pride of its village back in Sāmoa, from Tuamasaga and A'ana on Upolu to Fa'asaleleaga on Savai'i. When these teams meet, they bring the whole village with them.
The union runs the league with one principle at its centre: mana first. The rugby is fierce, but the respect that holds it together is fiercer. We protect the dignity of the players, the referees and the villages they represent. That is the spirit the season is built on, and it is captured in the union's motto: Tautua mo Sāmoa, service for Sāmoa.
So bring the family, find your village, and let's go again. O le ala i le pule o le tautua: the path to leadership is through service.
