Tautua mo Sāmoa: Service at the Heart of the Union

Three words sit on the Auckland Samoa Rugby Football Union crest, and they say everything about who the union is: Tautua mo Sāmoa. Service for Sāmoa. It is more than a motto. It is the whole philosophy of the union, distilled into a phrase every Samoan understands in their bones.

The path to leadership

In fa'a Samoa, service is not the lowest role. It is the highest path. As the saying goes, O le ala i le pule o le tautua: the path to leadership is through service. You earn the right to lead by serving your people first.

That idea runs through everything the union does. The volunteers who run the season are serving. The leaders who give years of their lives to the union are serving. The families who back their village every weekend are serving.

Service in every direction

Everything the union makes is meant to feel like service: to the villages, by giving each one a place to play under its own name; to the aiga, by creating a gathering point season after season; to the young men, by offering a healthy, disciplined outlet and a connection to their culture; and to Sāmoa, by keeping the language, the values and the village identity alive far from home.

Plenty of organisations have a motto on the wall. The difference here is that Tautua mo Sāmoa is a standard the union actually tries to live up to. Service first. That is the heart of the union, and always has been.
