Finals rugby does not care about the round robin, and Sale'imoa proved it. In a Cup quarter-final at Aorere Park on 11 October, they knocked over B/Y Vaiala 20 points to 10, sending one of the season's form sides out of the championship race.
B/Y Vaiala had finished second on the ladder and arrived as one of the favourites. But finals footy is a different beast, and Sale'imoa fronted up with the kind of physical, disciplined performance that wins knockout games. They controlled the contest, kept their composure, and closed it out.
For a village that had ridden the ups and downs of the round robin, it was a statement: on the day that mattered most, Sale'imoa were the better side.
The win booked Sale'imoa a place in the Cup semi-finals the following week, keeping their championship dream alive. It also underlined what the union's finals series is all about: every village gets its shot, and form on paper counts for nothing once the knockout rugby begins.
