Respect the Referees: The Union's Stand for On-Field Safety

There is no game without the person in the middle. The Auckland Samoa Rugby Football Union has put that simple truth at the centre of how it leads, taking a clear and public stand for referee welfare and on-field safety.

Leading, not just reacting

Good organisations are judged by how they respond when something matters. The union chose to lead. Working alongside Auckland Rugby, it put real structure behind player and official safety: a considered plan focused on prevention, intervention, and planning for the future.

This was not a quiet internal memo. The union carried the message out into the community through its Respect the Referees campaign, reaching thousands and sparking exactly the kind of conversation grassroots sport needs to have. Community voices and Pacific media helped carry it well beyond a single weekend.

Why it matters

Every match the union runs depends on an official willing to take the whistle. Protecting and respecting them is part of protecting everyone in the game. It comes back to the union's core principle: mana first. Honouring the referee is fa'aaloalo, respect, lived out on the field.

Back your village hard, but respect the official who makes the game possible. When the referee is respected, the game is safer, fairer, and stronger for everyone.
