There is no game without the person in the middle. The Auckland Samoa Rugby Football Union has made that simple truth a point of leadership, putting respect for referees and their welfare at the heart of how the Village League is run.
Every match in the union depends on an official prepared to take the whistle. They make the hard calls, manage the heat of a village derby, and keep the players safe. Without them, there is no competition, only chaos.
Respecting that role is not a slogan for the union. It is part of the standard every village is asked to hold, on the field and on the sideline: back your team hard, but honour the referee who makes the game possible.
It comes back to the principle the league is built on: mana first. Protecting the dignity of the referee is part of protecting the dignity of everyone in the game, the players, the villages, and the families watching on.
That is fa'aaloalo, respect, one of the deepest values of fa'a Samoa, lived out in a rugby context. When the official is respected, the game is safer, fairer and stronger for it.
The union is committed to supporting the people who officiate its matches and to setting a tone of respect that the whole competition can be proud of. So when the whistle blows this weekend, remember the person blowing it. Respect the referee, and you respect the game.
