Some organisations come and go. The Auckland Samoa Rugby Football Union has done something much harder: it has lasted. For close to three decades, the union has carried Samoan village rugby in Auckland, season after season, run by its own community and rooted in Otara, South Auckland.
That kind of longevity is rare in grassroots sport, and it does not happen by accident. It happens because generations of families decided this competition was worth keeping alive.
The union operates as a registered incorporated society, governed by its elected officers and run for the benefit of its member villages. Behind that formal structure is something simpler and stronger: people who turn up. Volunteers who run the season. Families who back their village. Leaders who serve year after year.
Close to thirty years on, the union is not just a competition. It is a fixture of Samoan life in Auckland, an institution families have grown up around and now pass on to their children.
The thread that runs through it all is the union's motto: Tautua mo Sāmoa, service for Sāmoa. The work of the union has always been to honour the villages, protect the players and referees, and keep the game strong for the children who will carry it next.
As the union heads toward its next milestone, the mission stays the same: village first, mana first, and the game kept strong for the generations to come. Close to thirty years strong, and still going.
